"Today, there is a need for books that can truly make us re-think and evaluate all our firm (obstinate) beliefs. In ‘Culture and Creativity’, an inquisitive, authentic and fluid mind explores many areas of knowledge dwelt upon by Indians since millennia...
The editor has chosen well, covering most of the milestones crossed by N Manu Chakravarthy in his multi-disciplinary career. His ‘Madhyama Marga’ framework makes one remember ‘middleway’, the  term used by Gyorgy Lukacs’ to describe Sir Walter Scott’s protagonists in novels like Waverley. Here too, before jumping into any subject, the author denounces positing himself in any cliched ideology, thus creating a middle position for himself.

The author is critical of the prevailing blindness towards holistically understanding the multi-dimensionality of Indian culture and society. A trail of thoughts across the book reveal his intent to shed light on how Western models like globalisation..."

About the book:

Honoured to be the editor of the book 'Culture and Creativity' - a collection of unpublished essays of internationally acclaimed senior culture critic and author - Prof. N Manu Chakravarthy. Our book was launched at Manipal International Literature Festival (MILAP) in 2019. Edited with an introduction and an exclusive interview with Prof. Manu, this book also has a special interview on our intellectual guru late UR Ananthamurthy.(renowned author, academician, Jnanpith Awardee)

Culture and Creativity is a collection of essays by N. Manu Chakravarthy, a prominent culture critic and an inspiring teacher. He is known for his critical discourses on music, cinema, literature and several aspects of culture and philosophy. The essays in the book illustrate the intellectual and ethical perspectives that shape his discussions on a wide range of issues. N. Manu Chakravarthy’s reflections reveal the nature of his critical interpretations.

Culture and Creativity is based on the range of ideas N. Manu Chakravarthy has received from his father Prof. G.N. Chakravarthy and his teachers Prof. C.D. Narasimhiah, Prof. U.R. Ananthamurthy and Prof. B. Damodar Rao. He was also profoundly influenced by the ideas of Ivan Illich and Noam Chomsky and his dear friend D.R. Nagaraj. The book is a testimony to the kind of scholarship he values.

The essays in the book project N. Manu Chakravarthy’s inclusive views on religion, secularism, tradition and modernity. These find expression in his preoccupation with madyamamaarga which avoids all kinds of binaries. The references in the book to Sri Narayanaguru, M.K. Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and the interview with Gustavo Esteva, show this in clear terms. They also foreground his views on nationalism, metaphysics, media, politics and the crises of the third world and India in a globalised context.
