HORIZONS, The Newsletter of the center for Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University Fall 2013, Feb Covers a detail story on the research contributions of UK. The Newsletter is an initiative of the Dept. of History: Center for Africana Studies, Directed by Dr Franklin W. Knight. One of the lead editor Dr Vijay is a PhD Scholar of the Hopkins University. The Center for Africana Studies and Center for Race and Culture: MICA is working on collaborative research projects. The Newsletter has also extensively covered all the art works of UK.

About the Editor/Director of the Journal: Dr Franklin W. Knight joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1973 and in 1991 was appointed the Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Professor of History. Professor Knight was president of The Historical Society (2004–2006), and served as president of the Latin American Studies Association between October 1998 and May 2000. He also serves on advisory committees of the National Research Council, the Handbook of Latin American Studies of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and the editorial boards of several academic journals. He is the director of the Dept. of History and the Centre for Africana Studies and the senior Editor of the reputed Journal titled HORIZON.

"Research Fellow Expands MICA's Global Research"

MICA: "MICA's Office of Research is committed to advancing art and design scholarship by engaging students and faculty in project-based research experiences. This past academic year, the College was able to host two leading international scholars-one from Bangalore and the other from Poland-who helped further that mission. Both scholars came to MICA to further research their doctoral dissertations. The College provided mentorship to the scholars as they conducted their research, while the scholars engaged with the MICA community through guest lectures and as guest faculty in studio and art history classes. "Hosting research fellows at MICA expands the dialogue about creative practice and research, and broadens our sense of an academic community through meaningful and productive relationships with those from other countries and cultures," Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies Gwynne Keathley said. The first to join MICA was Unni "UK" Krishnan Karrikat, who began his tenure at the College in November 2012 as MICA's first Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral and Professional Research Fellow. Karikkat is a PhD candidate in the Department of History of Art and Aesthetics at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. He came to MICA to work closely with MICA's Center for Race and Culture (CRC), an interactive center that researches and investigates the relationship between race, culture, and visual art traditions.

"MICA is incubating not just artistic leadership, but right-brain, abstract thinkers who are going to be crucial to solving global issues," said Leslie King-Hammond, PhD, founding director of the CRC and graduate dean emerita.
Karikkat, whose main interest is the comparative study of popular culture and iconic imagery in the United States and India, applied to work at MICA because of its excellent reputation and the unique combination of art history, the humanities, and practice-based disciplines that the College provides. CRC turned out to be the perfect location for him to further strengthen his methodology in the study of visual and popular culture for his dissertation.
Before coming to MICA, Karrikat had won more than 50 prizes, awards, scholarships, and titles in local, regional, national, and international art competitions. After receiving his master's degree, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist, as well as an artist, strategist, and research scholar. Apart from being an activist, Karrikat has also volunteered with several nonprofit organizations to help people affected by natural disasters in India.
During his tenure at the College, Karrikat represented MICA at world-renowned institutions, including University of Oxford and University of Cambridge, both in the United Kingdom, where he was invited to present the research he completed at MICA. The response to the presentation of his research paper, titledPeace, Identity, and Religion of South India: Mother Goddess of the Nation and Her Beloved Daughters, was overwhelmingly positive."
"It was a pleasure for me to represent MICA on an international research platform," Karrikat said. "The kind of hospitality I received from MICA and the ability to explore and research were fabulous. The amount of projects, discussions, and research productivity in such a small amount of time was unbelievable."

Honoured to be selected amongst rest of the four senior American professionals, for Leadership in respective area of Specialisation. The Title is been announced by Baltimore Business Journal for the month of Nov 2012. While being at Baltimore with Maryland Institute College of Art at the Center for Race & Culture and Office of Research as Senior Research fellow/Fulbright Doctoral & professional research fellow, I was fortunate to achieve a list of accomplishments including the invitation to present my research paper at Oxford University, attend a conference at Cambridge, presenting research to senior scholars of South Asian studies such as Dr Christopher Pinney- University College London, Dr Homi K Bhaba- Director of Humanities Department at Harvard University, Dr Sumathi Ramaswamy-Duke University, Dr Ajay Sinha- Mt Holyoke Univ., Dr Preminda Jacob-UMBC, and working with senior professors, critics, and Artists of MICA. I was also fortunate to present couple of Public Forum, Scholars conference at MICA, at the Washington DC Office of Fulbright -United States Department of State and at Reginald F Lewis Museum. I was honoured to be invited to several Museums and Galleries for Jury and to deliver series of Workshops on ‘Creative Intelligence’. MICA Dean of Office of Research- Dr Robert Merrill and Founding Director of Center for Race & Culture- Dr Leslie King Hammond have been very kind enough for all their extensive support for research and involving me in their major projects, I am highly obliged for their kind support for the on-going effort to publish my recent research titled "The Image of Obama: The visual transmigration from Political leadership to Cultural Heroism". With the prestigious and permanent association with MICA, I Hope to further excel in my on-going effort for research and publication to the field of Media, Entertainment and broader spectrum of Art.

A batch that has been loved by all,

Mocked, imitated, every one of them,

Leaving none left to be laughed upon,

Gang raped the cute virgin Minnie mouse,

And obediently imitated all faculties precisely yet respectfully.

Oh! What a ragging, what a game and what a session of “Media and entertainment”;

So unpredictable, hilarious and ground breaking humour everything within the line of controls and comfort abilities, 

The event made all laughs the ass off… gifting the abdominal pain for days…

The dance of pairs chosen so smartly, to dance on toes like the punished victim- poor Siddarth…

And the item bomb who took the case of all the “men” overruling all the girls –the one and only vikas  

And the last session, such melodramatic,

Emotional and lost in tears of loss, 

Such that bouncers like Joshi & Raghav sunk in tears of loss!!!

OMG! I felt the depth of their relationship, and wished…

If I could be one amongst them as a student, in their batch!!!

 For the moments when I envied on the dialogues of Shinu mam, Vadi sir and Asha mam,

 When they said “they are an outstanding team, such that they will do anything for them”

 I wished for a moment if I had such team as my students, for what not would I do by now! ;P

For I prayed “May they be blessed, may such rare bonds be alive” For not many batch are as lucky as this batch.
